Platform-Specific Citation Patterns
Perplexity cites the highest diversity of sources per response (average 6.4 sources). It heavily favors fresh content and tends to cite more niche industry publications.
ChatGPT with browsing weights domain authority heavily, favoring established media outlets and well-ranked pages over newer content.
Gemini shows the strongest alignment with Google's ranking signals — if a page ranks in Google's top 3 for a query, its Gemini citation probability increases 3.4x.
What This Means for Your Citation Strategy
Getting listed or mentioned on the top cited domains should be the core of any AI visibility strategy:
1. Build a meaningful Reddit presence in 2–3 relevant subreddits 2. Earn a Wikipedia page or mention if you meet notability standards 3. Accumulate G2 and Capterra reviews actively 4. Target Forbes, TechCrunch, and vertical-specific publications for earned media 5. Invest in YouTube content — video is increasingly surfaced in AI answers
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Reddit really more cited than Wikipedia?
Yes, in our analysis of 30M citations. Reddit's advantage is volume and recency — it covers almost every product category with current community sentiment. Wikipedia provides depth and authority for established brands and concepts. Both are essential.
Does social media (Twitter/X, LinkedIn) drive AI citations?
Twitter/X had minimal direct citation in our analysis, largely because it's not indexed by Bing/Google in a way that feeds AI training data well. LinkedIn company pages do appear in citations, especially for B2B brands. Focus on Reddit and review platforms over social media for AI citation impact.
